Gorham High School Animal Care Program

Every Thursday morning, 4 students from Gorham High School come to the farm to help out while learning about farming and raising alpacas.

First, we handle the daily chores: Cleaning up, replacing tired hay with fresh, rinsing water buckets and refilling, plus feeding the herd their morning grain.

As the chores are being done, we will observe the herd, and look for any problems that may be occuring. Changes in attitude, such as an animal separating from the herd, or cushing down when the others are eating are a sign that they may not be feeling well. We'll check eyes and ears to make sure they are clean and clear. We'll also observe the way they are feeding and drinking, as well as they way they are walking or running.

After chores, we try to learn something about barn and farm maintenance. Everything from driving the tractor and using the front end loader, to using a variety of hand tools.

With the Show season around the corner, we are learning how to halter and walk the animals. This is giving us all some good "hands on" experience.

More to come from the GHS Alpaca Crew!
